Error: "The install file cannot be properly validated..."

On Windows XP computers, this error can appear if the root certificates are not up-to-date. Since, Microsoft has ended the support for Windows XP, you will no longer receive software updates from Windows Update and cannot install the latest root certificates.

If you see the message: "A problem has occurred that needs your attention" on your Norton which was purchased from Staples, read Message: "A problem has occurred that needs your attention" when installing Norton 360 purchased from Staples.

You should consider upgrading your operating system to the latest version of Windows, read Windows XP support has ended to know more about your options.

STEP 1

Delete temporary files

  1. Exit all programs.

  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  3. Type the following text, and then press Enter.

    %temp%

    The current user's Temp folder opens in Windows Explorer.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  5. Press Delete.

  6. If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

STEP 2

Download Norton from your Norton account

  1. Sign in to your account.

  2. Click Download.

  3. Under Install on this device, click Agree & Download.

    By default, the Norton product installer is saved to the Downloads folder.

  4. When the download finishes, double-click the Norton product Installer.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  6. When LiveUpdate finishes installing updates, click Continue.

  7. In the Installation Successful window, click Restart.

    You must restart your computer to complete the installation process.

STEP 3

Run Windows updates

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    If you receive the User Account Control prompt, click Continue.

  3. In the left pane, click Check for updates.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Run Windows updates on Windows 11/10

  1. Press the Windows + S keys to open the Search Windows box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
