Error: "Scan Error" and "At Risk" on Norton for Mac

To fix this problem, run LiveUpdate and restart your Mac. If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall Norton.


Run LiveUpdate

  1. Start Norton.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton main window, click LiveUpdate.

  3. When the LiveUpdate finishes, exit all programs.

  4. Restart your Mac

    If the problem persists, go to Step 2.

RemoveSymantecMacFiles tool does not work on macOS 10.15.0 or later. To manually uninstall Norton on your Mac, read: Uninstall Norton device security on Mac.


Download and run RemoveSymantecMacFiles tool

    RemoveSymantecMacFiles removes all folders that are created by Norton installers and any files within those folders including any you that have created.

  1. Download the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip file.

  2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock to be in the Finder.

  3. On the menu bar, click Go > Downloads to go to the Downloads folder.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you downloaded the file using Safari, open the RemoveSymantecMacFiles folder.

    • If you downloaded the file using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, double-click the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip file to expand it, and then open the RemoveSymantecMacFiles folder.

  5. In the RemoveSymantecMacFiles folder, control-click the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.command file, and then click Open with > Terminal (default).

    To run this tool, you must be logged on to your Mac with an Administrator account with a non-blank password.

  6. In the Terminal window, type your administrator password, and then press return.

    When you type your password, no characters appear.

  7. To remove all Symantec files and folders, type 1.

    If you want to quit RemoveSymantecMacFiles without removing any files, type 2.

  8. Press return.

    RemoveSymantecMacFiles removes all of the Symantec files.

  9. When the RemoveSymantecMacFiles tool finishes removing the Symantec files, in the Terminal window, type y, and press return to restart your Mac.

    Before you press return, make sure that you save your work in other open applications.


Install Norton

  1. Go to my.norton.com and click Sign In.

  2. Type in your email address and password for Norton, and click Sign In.

  3. In the My Norton portal, click Download.

  4. In the Get Started page, click Agree & Download.

  5. When the download finishes, double-click the file that you downloaded to launch the Norton installer.

  6. In the Norton installer window, select I want to join Norton Community Watch, and click Install to start the installation.

  7. When you see a prompt for Install Helper tool, type your administrator password and then click Install Helper.

  8. When prompted, in the Norton installation window, click Restart.

  9. After restarting your Mac, in the Norton installation window that appears, click Open Now to open System Preferences.

  10. In the Security & Privacy preferences window, on the General tab, click the lock icon at the bottom, type your administrator password and click Unlock.

  11. Next to System software from application Norton was blocked from loading, click Allow. Exit the System Preferences window.

  12. In the Norton installation window, click Continue.

  13. In the Norton Installation window, click Open to go to the Security & Privacy settings.

    To complete the Norton installation on macOS 10.15.x or later, you need to allow Full Disk access to Norton.

  14. In the Security & Privacy preferences window, on the Privacy tab, click the lock icon at the bottom, type your administrator password and click Unlock.

  15. In the left pane, select Full Disk Access, and then check Norton System Extension in the right pane. Exit the System Preferences window.

  16. In the Installation Successful window, click Restart.

    You must restart your computer to complete the installation process.

  17. In the Norton installation window, click Next, and then click Complete.

  18. If prompted to activate, type your email address and password to sign in to Norton. From the list of available licenses in your account, select your license and click Next.

    Norton installation is now complete.
