Keep your Norton device security up to date

LiveUpdate keeps your Norton protection up to date and helps safeguard your device from evolving cybersecurity threats. Your Norton product runs LiveUpdate to install the latest security updates as and when new updates are made available on the Norton servers.

By default, your Norton product downloads and installs the latest definition and program updates regularly from Norton servers to help protect your computer from new threats.

If you turned off Automatic LiveUpdate or have been offline, you can check when you last received Norton device security updates and run LiveUpdate, if necessary, to assure that you have the latest:

  • Virus definitions that help protect your device against malware, unauthorized network access, spam emails, and much more.

  • Program updates that extend operating system or hardware compatibility, adjust performance issues, or fix program errors.

Security updates are available to you as long as your subscription is active. If the product displays your subscription status as expired, you may not be protected from emerging threats.

Check when your Norton product was last updated

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Security dashboard, in the LiveUpdate tile, click Open.

  4. In the Norton LiveUpdate window, you can view the last updated date in the Check for Updates tab.

  5. If the date is older than a day or two, click Update Now/Check Now.

Make sure that Norton Automatic LiveUpdate is turned on

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Security window, in the LiveUpdate section, click Open.

  4. In the Norton LiveUpdate window, click the Settings tab.

  5. In the Automatically update virus definitions and Norton application row, move the switch to On.

Common LiveUpdate problems

A back-end service outage can stop LiveUpdate. To identify if there is a service outage, check the Norton Service Status page. In such cases, try running LiveUpdate after some time.

Check for the following easily fixable issues that often cause LiveUpdate problems:

  • Your computer is not connected to the Internet

  • LiveUpdate running the first time after installation usually takes more time to complete

  • Your computer has insufficient disk space

  • Your computer's date and time are not correct

  • Norton Firewall is not set to allow traffic

  • Your parental application settings block the connection

  • Your network proxy settings are not set up correctly
