Message: "Update Failed: Please try again or click Details for more information." on Norton device security product for Mac

To fix this problem, exit all programs and restart your Mac. After the restart, update your Norton device security product for Mac.

If the problem persists, uninstall your Norton device security product for Mac, run RemoveNortonMacFiles, and then reinstall.  

Step 1: Uninstall your Norton product

  1. Close your Norton product if it is open. 
  2. On your Mac, click the Finder icon in the dock, and then click Applications in the left pane under Favorites section.
  3. Find the Norton product icon and drag it to the Trash.

  4. click Continue to allow your Norton product to remove the system extension.

  5. When prompted, type your administrator account password, and then click OK.

  6. In the window that appears, click Uninstall.

  7. When prompted, type your administrator account password, and then click Install Helper.

  8. Click Restart Now.

Step 2: Download and run RemoveNortonMacFiles as an administrator

RemoveNortonMacFiles removes all the folders that your Norton product installers created, and all the files within those folders including any that you have created.

  1. Download the RemoveNortonMacFiles.zip file.

  2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
  3. In the Finder window, click Downloads in the left pane under Favorites.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you downloaded the file using Safari browser, open the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder.

    • If you downloaded the file using the Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browsers, double-click the RemoveNortonMacFiles.zip file to expand it, and then open the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder.

  5. In the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder, control-click the RemoveNortonMacFiles.command file, and then click Open with > Terminal (default).

    To run this tool, you must be logged on with an Administrator account and a non-blank password.

  6. In the Terminal window, type your administrator password, and then press return.

    When you type your password, no characters appear.

  7. To remove all the Norton product files and folders, type 1.

    If you want to quit RemoveNortonMacFiles without removing any files, type 2.

  8. Press return.

    RemoveNortonMacFiles tool removes all of the Norton product files.

  9. When the RemoveNortonMacFiles tool finishes removing the Norton product files, in the Terminal window, type y, and press return to restart your Mac.

    Before you press return, make sure that you save your work in other open applications.

Step 3: Reinstall your Norton product

Before you download the latest installer setup file, make sure that you delete all the older installer setup files available in the Downloads folder.

  1. Sign in to your account.

  2. Type in your Norton account email address and password, and click Sign In.

  3. In the My Norton portal, click Download.

  4. In the Get Started page, click Agree and Download.

  5. When the download finishes, double-click the file that you downloaded to launch the Norton installer.

  6. Before you install your Norton product, click Norton License Agreement to read the product license agreement. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. For detailed steps, read Download and install your Norton device security product on Mac

Do it yourself - Advanced troubleshooting steps

Step 1: Check the system extension status

  1. Close all open applications.  
  2. Click the Finder icon  in the dock, and then click Downloads.
  3. Delete all the Norton related tools, installers, setup files and folders.
  4. From the Apple menu select Utilities > Terminal.
  5. Type the following command and press Return.

    systemextensionsctl list 
  6. Check if there are any Norton/Symantec related system extensions. For example, com.symantec.mes.systemextension
  7. If you still see any Norton system extensions, note down the name of the extensions and go to Step 2
  8. If there are no Norton related system extensions in the list, reinstall your Norton product

Step 2: Disable SIP and remove the system extension manually

  1. From the Apple menu click Restart
  2. When your Mac restarts, press and hold down the Command(⌘) + R keys upon hearing the startup chime. Hold the keys till the Apple logo appears to load the Recovery mode
  3. Once your Mac is in the Recovery mode, from the Apple menu select Utilities > Terminal
  4. Type the following command and press Return
    csrutil disable
  5. Restart your Mac.
  6. From the Apple menu select Utilities > Terminal
  7. Type the following commands and press Return.  
    systemextensionsctl list

    systemextensionsctl uninstall <teamID> <bundleID>
    In the above example, teamID is 9PTGMPNXZ2 and bundleID is com.symantec.mes.systemextension. 
  8. Type the following command and press Return to validate the system extension list and confirm that no Norton extensions are listed. 
    systemextensionsctl list 
  9. Restart your Mac. When your Mac restarts, press and hold down the Command(⌘) + R keys upon hearing the startup chime. Hold the keys till the Apple logo appears to load the Recovery mode.
  10. From the Apple menu select Utilities > Terminal
  11. Type the following command and press Return.  
    csrutil enable 
  12. Restart your Mac.  
  13. Check for updates by clicking on the Apple menu > System Settings/System Preferences
  14. Reinstall your Norton product
